Romans 8:12a

"Therefore, brethren, we are debtors - "

Debt is killing people today. Over leveraging homes, buying luxury vehicles with inordinate amounts of financing, maxing out multiple credit cards, etc... The burden is so unmanageable that many are sadly in a place where they must now simply file for bankruptcy and even find themselves homeless. This is not a place where I ever want to find myself, and by God's grace perhaps I never will.

But in God's spiritual economy I am bankrupt. I am a debtor, a debtor to mercy. My life in Jesus, now and into eternity, was so costly, so expensive, so lavishly over-the-top that even if I could live and work over a 1,000 years I'd never reduce the principle balance by one cent. So, my life is not my own and I'm forced, as it were, to hand the "keys" to it over to the Lender and say, "I'm sorry, I simply cannot afford to make the payments."

The beauty of this analogy, which is less a metaphor and more a reality than I may imagine, is that this debt isn't something I signed up for; I wasn't looking to make this purchase. It was placed upon me. Ironically, I wouldn't have made this acquisition if left to my own devices. It just wouldn't have been appealing to my senses. In fact, it was repulsive.

This is the power of debt. It overtakes you and puts you in a place of complete dependence. And this is where I am today, a debtor, bankrupt with nowhere to turn but to Him. "Thank you God, for pouring out such great love that I could never repay, and putting me in a place where all I can do is look up while on my knees and say to You, 'Please, have mercy!'"
