"Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust;"
How can I hear the Lord's lovingkindness this morning; in the morning, when I first wake up, when my mind is fresh and my heart is open? For David, he was consumed with thoughts of possible destruction day and night. He was relentlessly pursued by his enemies so that he rarely had an opportunity to be free from thoughts of self-protection and preservation, even while he was sleeping. Yet, he desired nothing more than to start off his day with the only thing that could bring him comfort, peace and assurance, and that was the lovingkindness of God. If it's not heard early in the morning, then the noise of the day will drown out the sound of His lovingkindness even though it's always ringing with a loud tone.
So what does it sound like, that sweet lovingkindness of God? To start, it sounds like nothing at all, because early in the morning my eyes open and it's quiet. He's given me breath, sight, and the sense of the morning fresh air. The warmth of my bed, Victoria next to me (and sometimes Poppy),... these are all silent expressions of God's lovingkindness to me.
But what do I physically hear? Sometimes I can hear the chirping of the birds full of zeal, ready to start their day, or the breeze brushing across the limbs of the trees. Even the mechanical sounds of coffee brewing or the stream of water coming out of the shower-head; these are all mercies that are new to me every morning. (cf. Lamentations 3:22-23) But if I want God to talk to me, then I must go to the only place where I know He'll speak with me. His spoken and written Word is my portion. (cf. Hebrews 1:1-3) And early in the morning shall I rise up and greet Thee (cf. Psalm 5:3) with that Book, that Treasure, that sweet Honey (cf. Psalm 19) in and on my presence. This is where David went, and this where I shall go. I have no where else to turn, for God (Christ) alone possesses the "words of eternal life" (John 6:68c).
